Gardeners Rest is a Real Ale pub with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, where people of all ages and backgrounds can come together to play traditional games such as dominoes and bar billiards, listen to some of Sheffield's fine musicians, or just read a book, and, of course, enjoy a fine range of drinks.
We do not have a television, or play background music preferring the buzz of good conversation and live music.
So, in spirit, a traditional pub but with some modern aspects - our drinks range includes continental beers, we run art exhibitions, a weekly quiz night and have inside toilets.
The pub was built in Victorian times, probably around 1898, and belonged to a long-gone local brewery called Cockaynes. They were based in Capel Street next to where the Mason's Arms is now. In 1915 Gardeners Rest was sold to John Smiths who came into Sheffield, buying several pubs around that time.
In 1991, Smiths sold the pub to Mansfield Brewery.
This was a difficult time for many pubs in areas like Neepsend - the old terraced housing had gone, the big works closed, although many small businesses remained, more people drove to work and the traditional trade of a pub like this was decimated.
In September 1998 we bought the closed Gardeners Rest and
re-opened it on 9th October 1998 as a Real Ale Freehouse.
At the time, nearby pubs of a similar nature included the famous Fat Cat and the Cask and Cutler (now back to its original name The Wellington).
Ten years on, the area has become one of the best Real Ale areas in the country and is enjoying a thriving trade - people appreciate quality products, value for money, good company and 'real' pubs and will travel many miles to visit this area!
